But with a lot of surgical weight loss options at present, finding the best one may seem overwhelming. But below is a primer on the different weight loss surgeries that are available today.

Currently, there are three weight loss surgeries performed across countries that people who may have problems with their weight could avail. These are sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

This type of weight loss surgery involves a surgeon to remove 80-85 percent of the stomach. The, the remaining portion of the stomach will be stapled together. This is considered to be a restrictive procedure that will limit the amount of food consumption.

Gastric Banding

This type has been available for a long time now. This involves the surgeon to place an adjustable silicone band around the stomach’s upper part. Of the three surgeries, this is the only one that is adjustable. The amount of food that a person’s stomach could handle can be changed with an office visit, by adjusting the tightness of the band in the stomach.

Gastric Bypass

Compared to the two other surgeries, gastric bypass surgery has been performed the longest. In this procedure, the surgeon cuts across the top layer of the stomach in order to create a walnut-sized pouch. Then the surgeon will attach this pouch to the small intestine so food will bypass the stomach and directly enter to the small intestine.

This type of surgery is a combined procedure. This means that it limits portion size and restricts food absorption, thus the process is call malabsorption.

Depending on the needs and the advice of the doctor, there will a type of surgery that will be best to achieve the best results. It is important to keep in mind that for each of the mentioned procedures, an exercise and diet program should be followed to have good results. The surgery should serve as a tool to help in weight loss process.

Also, before making any decision it is very important to talk to your doctor first and evaluate if a weight loss surgery is right for you. If it is, know which of the types will be most beneficial for you.
